FAQ
What is Wavetracks GPS?
Wavetracks GPS is an application built for the iPhone 3G and 3GS that uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS to enable wave riders (surfers, body boarders, stand up paddle boarders etc.) to track their individual waves. This includes duration, distance, speed, angle of travel and path traveled on a map.
How do I carry the iPhone on me while surfing?
The iPhone needs to be placed in zip lock bag, then placed in a waterproof case, we recommend you use Aquapac Waterproof iPhone case (product code 104). It is essential that the seals on all waterproof bags are closed correctly. The double waterproof bag method will act to protect your iPhone from any harm. The next step is to simply enjoy your surf.
How long will the battery last when using Wavetracks GPS?
During testing, we found that surfing for an hour whilst running Wavetracks GPS drained the battery by 25%. Therefore if you are lucky enough to be able to surf for 4 hours non-stop you should be able to track the whole session. Battery life will vary dependent on the age of your iPhone and the temperature conditions it is used in.
Will Wavetracks GPS work with the original first generation iPhone?
No, Wavetracks GPS works using the GPS satellite system and the original iPhone does not have a receiver.
Can I run Wavetracks GPS in the background while talking on the phone or using other apps?
The current iPhone SDK prohibits third-party apps from running in the background. If you exit Wavetracks GPS while tracking an activity, the app will pause, and you can continue tracking your activity by hitting 'start' when you return to the app.
What happens if the phone rings while using Wavetracks GPS?
If you ignore the call, nothing happens. If you answer it, the app pauses until you finish the call. When you're ready to continue tracking your activity, hit 'start' and Wavetracks GPS will continue tracking at that time.
We don’t recommend you take phone calls whilst surfing, you may miss that wave of the day :)
