About

Wavetracks GPS is a revolutionary new approach to surfing performance.

If you’re looking to improve your surfing performance it’s important to know where your current ability lies. Using the iPhone’s GPS technology, Wavetracks GPS can gauge your surfing ability and the difficulty of the conditions you are surfing in.

The application tracks each of your waves by measuring speed, distance, time and the angle of travel from your point of take-off. It then plots these on a map so you can review your surf session and identify where you can improve.

Surfer Ability Graph

The graph below shows the relationship between wave height and peel angle and illustrates the levels of ability within surfing.

Experienced wave riders have a skill-level that enables them to ride a wider range of conditions, both small and bigger waves, with smaller breaking wave peel angles.

When waves approach the shoreline a surfer who is riding 90° to the crest of a wave will be riding straight to the beach. As this angle decreases, the surfer will travel faster along the face of each wave to keep up with the breaking section. In general, waves that travel faster, with a smaller peel angle are more difficult to ride than a slow wave with a greater peel angle.

Between 90° and 26° is considered the surfable limit, beyond 25° the wave closes out (breaks along the entire section simultaneously).
